Poppies in the Rain is a one-of-a-kind reversible hand-felted shawl inspired by the vivid beauty of red poppies emerging against a dark, rain-soaked landscape.
One side is composed of charcoal grey and shifting shades of grey, with brilliant red poppies rising through the surface. Fine fiber lines form an intricate field of abstract floral shapes, while touches of green move through the composition like stems and vegetation after rain.
Turn the shawl over and its character changes completely. The reverse is a warm, aged-gold tone, creating a quieter and more understated alternative. Yarn is felted directly into this side of the fabric, with subtle touches of Lurex adding a restrained glimmer as the shawl moves.
The irregular edges, changes in texture and asymmetrical composition are integral to the handmade design. At approximately 80.7 inches long, the shawl can be draped, wrapped and arranged in different ways, allowing different portions of the artwork—and either side—to become visible.
A matching handmade red poppy brooch is included, allowing the shawl to be secured and styled in different arrangements.
Each Gelme’s Designs piece is individually conceived and hand felted, making this shawl a singular piece of wearable fiber art.
